This course is about giving you the necessary knowledge of production planning and control in healthcare so that you can optimise the balance between patients' care needs and the available capacity, and thereby prevent chaos and long queues. You will learn how professional production planning should be carried out at different decision levels, from the multi-year political level to the operational and daily level, by making decisions in a determined and structured way. We also go through how to produce and analyse registrations and statistical data and take account of differences in care processes between different specialities.

We go through how production planning and control works at different planning levels, which decisions are made and what is important to consider to achieve effective and optimised production planning: The political level: planning several years ahead The strategic level: planning 1-1.5 years ahead with allocation between different care providers in a region. The overall tactical level: planning three to four months ahead with allocation of overall capacity such as beds and operating theatre time in a hospital. The tactical level: At this level the production plan for a unit is created The operational level: The scheduling level The daily level: decisions ranging from one hour to one day ahead
A prerequisite for production planning is being able to analyse registrations and statistical data. We go through what to consider when assessing capacity needs by studying registrations and handling statistics.
Different specialities in healthcare have different time perspectives because they are based on patients' needs. You will learn how to take account of these aspects, for example that some specialities only have acute patients while others have a mix with more elective patients, the length of visits, the number of visits in a care episode and so on. All these components affect how the planning is done.
