Learning at Work 1 (LIA) is workplace-based training where you practise the work of a specialist assistant nurse in care of older people. Based on the content of the theoretical courses, you get the chance to reflect on and analyse the work, and to encounter organisational development, supervision and ethical issues. You also practise interpreting symptoms of common geriatric conditions and dementia, and recognising the need for symptom relief at the end of life.
The course covers the work of a specialist assistant nurse in care of older people and gives students the chance, based on the content of the theoretical courses, to reflect on and analyse the work. The course also covers organisational development and supervision, and the ethical issues an assistant nurse may face in caring for older people. When the opportunity arises, students practise interpreting symptoms of the most common geriatric conditions and side effects of the most common medicines, and distinguishing these from conditions caused by normal ageing, the most common dementia disorders, mental illnesses and any substance abuse problems in care of older people, as well as symptoms that an older person is at the end of life and needs relief from pain or anxiety in that situation.
